Introduction

Here are some new instructions for making a solar dryer. People have always preserved food in different forms: smoked, salted, lacto-fermented, canned, dried, etc. Solar drying is an easy and highly effective process for preserving food and aromatic plants. It is a gentle drying process that follows the rhythm of the sun. Drying makes it possible to preserve surplus vegetable crops or the spoils of harvesting in all seasons. By rehydrating the food, you can enjoy products all year round that have retained their aromas and nutritional qualities.

In these instructions, we present a compact, removable dryer that's perfect for our nomadic lifestyles. There are various models of solar dryer, but the operating principle is always the same: fresh air enters a thermal collector where it is heated by the greenhouse effect between a pane of glass and a black support. The heated air enters the insulated drying compartment and passes through all the drying racks before being extracted by a ventilation system.

For ideal drying, the temperature should be between 35°C and 45°C and the air in the drying chamber should be dry: as it dries, every body gives off humidity, hence the importance of ventilation to ensure a dry drying compartment. Poor ventilation will impair drying, and temperatures that are too high will destroy the aromas and nutritional qualities of the dried foodstuffs.
