Use of local materials (clay, wood fines). Could be made manually
Easy maintenance: has to be cleaned with a sponge once a week. Do not put it under the sun, otherwise seaweeds could grow.
Cheap (Merinsa sells if for 30$)
Long lifetime: several years
Could be sealed: the lid prevents the water from being re-contaminated
Disadvantages:
Use of silver (which is usually not available locally)
Use of an oven which could reach 1000°C --> ask a potter in your region if he has a ceramic oven you could use
Are heavy and bulky
In our case, the price of the filter is low but still too high for the people who need it as they live in slums and do not have a sufficient income. It is usually charities who buy filters to Merinsa Company and then give them away. The company does not make any profit with the filters, it is a social act.
