Introduction

A good, waterproof bike bag is very practical for everyday trips or bikepacking trips.

Reliable brands are expensive, but long-lasting. Their main asset is often their quick fastening system. If you buy the fastening system seperately, you can sew and attach the bag yourself, + you can adjust the size depending on the tarpaulins available and your personal needs.

Materials

Reused/upcycled tarp - e.g. from an advertising poster or truck cover

Must be strong/durable enough to last over time AND flexible enough to be sewn using a standard sewing machine.

Thin but sturdy plywood mount

Fastening clips: Ortlieb system (accessible on lecyclo.com,11 euros)

Alumunium bar/pole 1m x 15mm x 2mm

8 screws - diameter 4 4 standard nuts 4 T-nuts also known as knock nuts (self-lock in wood)

Thin inner tube (from a bike tyre) for the strap

Clip lock/fastener

Tools

Scissors, tape measure, pencils, sewing machine, drill, hacksaw, jigsaw, metal file, screwdriver

Step 1 - Cutting the tarp + sewing

Cut two rectangles

One measuring 40cm*75cm (Front)

One measuring 40*70cm (back)

Sew the 5 cm tarp band onto the front tarpaulin.

Sew on both parts inside out. Use strong needles for leather and ultra-resistant/strong thread.

Step 2 - Preparing the plywood mount

Cut the mount to 24x40cm

Drill as shown in photos. Leave a 18cm gap in the middle between the handles, and attach the support hook 28cm from the top.

Varnish the plywood if necessary

Step 3 - Prepare the interior handles

Adjust the aluminium bars to the length of the mount.

Be sure to properly file the edges so that it doesn't pierce any holes in the tarp.

Prepare the attachment system on the mount - line up the holes in the bar and the plywood.

Step 4 - Attaching the handle and the hook

Use the T-nuts to screw in the fastening system.

Cut the aluminum bar to 10 cm and bend it with a clamp.

Step 5 - Attaching the bag to the mount

Drill holes in the bag in line with the holes in the plywood

Attach to the aluminium bars

Just need to pass the strap through and attach the clip fastener, and you're ready to go!

Step 6 -

These dimensions should fit on most panier racks, but remember to double check and adjust the size to yours if needed.

To close, rotate 3x and close the clip mechanism.
